TIME SPENT
5 DAYS

Each medium tote bag takes 5 days to produce, from leather selection, and masterful treatment, hand-stitching and bag lining. The leather stitching alone takes 7+ hours of time, plus additional time is spent collaborating with local artisans across the lake for fabric.

FEATURED TECHNIQUE
LEATHER STITCHING

Due to the significant costs of leather stitching machines in Guatemala, makers need to be creative & resourceful in hand-stitching leather, an unusually thick & unforgiving material. Makers use industrial strength glue to ensure the leather stays in place while sewing.

CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE
LOCAL SYMBOLISM

Each design holds historical significance in the Mayan culture - the blue tones on the fabric are meant to appreciate the tranquil colors of the Lake Atitlan, while the design of the stripes symbolizes the roads of the artisans' home village of San Juan, La Laguna.
