HOW IT'S MADE

We believe in the importance of knowing what went into your purchase, from time to materials. From the hands of our partner artisans to you, this unique Handwoven Purple Blanket requires significant labor, skill and generational knowledge to create.

TIME SPENT
21 DAYS (3 WEEKS)

Each purple blanket takes 21 days to produce, from spinning the cotton to designing & dyeing the yarn, and finally weaving the final product on a back-strap loom. Since the back-strap loom can only weave a product as wide as the weaver's waist, every blanket has two panels hand-stitched together.

FEATURED TECHNIQUE
NATURAL DYE

All Casa Flor Ixcaco products use in-house handspun cotton & natural dye. The natural dye used for this particular color of purple is difficult to replicate as it requires the exact proportions of multiple traditional and natural ingredients - including walnut, hibiscus, bougainvillea, and basil.

CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE
LOCAL SYMBOLISM

Each design holds historical significance in the Mayan culture - the purple color represents the naturally growing, vibrant flowers that are native to Guatemala, while the design of the stripes symbolizes the roads of the artisans' home village of San Juan, La Laguna on Lake Atitlan.
